Top 5 Things You Miss Most

September 27, 2016 by Maddie

Hello Commodores! This past weekend was Family Weekend, and I’m sure it felt good to see some familiar faces around campus–I know it did for me! However, it may have made you miss home a little more. Good news: fall break is just two weeks away, so it is a perfect time to look forward to seeing and having the Top 5 things we miss most about home.

5. Lazy Sundays

At home, Sundays are the the perfect days to stay in your pajamas, watch TV, and relax before the coming week. For college students, it is the opposite. Most Sundays at Vanderbilt are spent in the library getting prepared for the coming school week. Fall break will be the perfect time to relax at home and get ready for the rest of the first semester of freshman year.

4. A Larger Bed

For many college students, adjusting to a twin-size bed is not easy. In just two weeks, you get to go home and sprawl out on your big, comfortable bed. If the thought of that doesn’t get you through your exams this week, I don’t know what will!

3. Home Cooked Meals

Don’t get me wrong, Vanderbilt has great food, especially compared to most other colleges. However, nothing beats a meal made by your own mom, so a home-cooked meal is something to get excited about returning home to. If your mom is not the best cook, then you can look forward to going to one of your favorite local restaurants in your hometown.

2. Showering Without Shoes On

When I came to college I never thought that one of things I would miss most would be showering without shoes on, but sometimes it is the little things we forget. Fall break will be a nice escape from the Vanderbilt community bathrooms, and your shower shoes!

1. Seeing your pet

You got to see your parents this past weekend, but unfortunately your pet most likely could not tag along. Although some of the houses on the Commons have animals, nothing is as comforting as cuddling with your own furry friend.

Top 5 Ways to Get Involved Politically on Campus

September 20, 2016 by Maddie

With the election quickly approaching, it is important for all students to be well-informed and ready to vote! At Vanderbilt, there are a plethora of opportunities to get involved politically. Here are the top 5:

5. Take a Political Science Class

Vanderbilt offers numerous political science courses–from “Introduction to American Government and Politics” to “National Security.” Taking a political science course will allow you to learn more about politics and how different governments, including our own government, work. Also, if you’re in the College of Arts and Science, a political science course can knock out one of your AXLE requirements!

4. Party Affiliation Organizations

If you are interested in specific party issues or party affiliation, you can join the College Republicans or College Democrats. Within these organizations, you can talk to people who share your similar beliefs, and have the opportunity to voice your opinion on issues.

3. The Vanderbilt Political Review

If you are interested in sharing your political views with even more people, the Vanderbilt Political Review may be for you. Through the Vanderbilt Political Review, you can write articles about political issues. In addition, there are opportunities on campus to write for The Vanderbilt Torch and GlobalVU, which are also political organizations.

2. Vote in the Vanderbilt Student Government Elections

There is no way to better prepare yourself for voting in the presidential election than to vote for your own Vanderbilt student officers. Some of the elections were held last week, including the elected positions in the Commons House Advisory Council and the VSG Senators, but there are still opportunities to vote or run for other Vanderbilt Student Government positions throughout the school year. It is a great way to have your voice be heard on campus!

1. Vote in the Election

Not only is voting on Vanderbilt’s campus important, but voting in the United States election as well. With the presidential election coming in less than two months, make sure you are registered to vote. For most students who come from other states, make sure you have signed up to receive your Absentee Ballot. It is our duty as bright, young citizens to vote and have our voices be heard!

Top 5 Ways to Be the Best Roomie on the Commons

September 14, 2016 by Thomas

So, most of us here on the Vanderbilt Commons are about three-and-a-half weeks into this strange experience that is referred to as the “Freshman Year of College.” (Cue dramatic music.) Seriously though, college can be a confusing and stressful time for us first-years, and a large component of this new experience is our roommate(s). Thus on the behest of the fine folks at My Commons Life, I bring you a quick survival good to help you navigate dealing with whomever you happen to be sharing a room.

1. Like, Actually Talk to Your Roommate

No doubt this is a very deep and profound conversation on the true nature of the universe and all that. Then again, they are probably just discussing how much they love Munchie Mart.
No doubt this is a very deep and profound conversation on the true nature of the universe and all that. Then again, they are probably just discussing how much they love Munchie Mart.

Alright, alright, I know what you are thinking, you already do that, and actually have had several movie-worthy dialogues with your roommate, but it bears emphasizing that talking on a consistent basis with your roommate about whatever, even the trivial, is the best way to get comfortable with each other and develop a better appreciation for each other’s viewpoints. You will truly be surprised (hopefully pleasantly) about what is not immediately obvious about your roommate if you do make habit of regular conversation. Crazy experiences, outside-the-box viewpoints, odd skills, who knows what you might learn? Besides, what is a more convenient way to relax than a nice little chat, roomie to roomie?

2. Communicate, communicate, COMMUNICATE!

If these guys both spun around 180 degrees, then maybe they could figure out how to clean their room.
If these guys both spun around 180 degrees, then maybe they could figure out how to clean their room.

This is a close relative to the point made above. In organizing the part of your life that revolves around your own room, a seriously key tool is communicating with your roommate about several basic points. Stuff in the nature of likes and dislikes, schedules, and who gets to put what where, should be the sort of roommate knowledge on which you have a pretty good grasp. The flipside of this is to make sure you assert yourself to a reasonable degree, and that the other guy knows full well how you roll. After all, be nice to your roommate, but make sure to be nice to yourself as well.

3. Ask Before You…

An example of questionable borrowing tactics.
An example of questionable borrowing tactics.

Use his lotion, borrow her charger, or wear that suave, cool tie, bracelet, or whatever on a big night out. If fact, just ask. You may or may not have had this experience, but nobody appreciates a borrower who does not use those magic words, “May I please…” Building up trust is a big thing when living with somebody who is still a relative stranger, and the best way to do this is to be completely above the table when it comes to using your roommate’s belongings. Even if it is some insignificant, like a cruddy little No. 2 pencil, integrity is key, and nothing is worse than the feeling that you can’t trust your roommate you bought with your hard-earned money, (or, more likely, the hard-earned money of your parents,) or that your roommate does not trust you.

4. Do Your Part to Not Put the Welcome Mat out for the Cockroaches

Can you spot what is wrong with this photo?
Can you spot what is wrong with this photo?

Nobody, at least we hope nobody, likes pests, especially those that are of the animal type, although I am sure we all know human pests to which we wish we could take a jumbo-sized flyswatter. They are not the issue in this piece of advice though. Cleanliness is one of the most effective lines of defense against pests, and one of the most effective ways of going after them. This being said, I would highly suggest making an effort to destroy any dirtiness that exists within your section of the room. Now, keeping your own area is, or should be, simple enough, and this not the place to go into proper sweeping technique. Call your mom for that.

On the issue of shared area and your roommate’s territory, it is necessary to say some words. Mainly, you do have a right to a roommate who makes a reasonable effort to not have their area look like a pigsty. What goes on in his section could have an effect on your section as well, especially when it comes to unwanted critters going about the room. Talk to the person, be nice, but be firm on this point. If your roommate explodes on this issue, or just refuses to keep his part of the room under control, take it up with your RA. When it comes to shared space, try to get your roomie to do his part, but it is better to take the initiative and actually just go and take out the trash than have a long, tiresome, and pointless debate with your roommate about the whole responsibility thing. For further helpful tips on this subject, seriously, call your folks.

5. Be Randomly Nice to Your Roommate

Note the healthiness of this gift.
The Gift of Good usually goes over pretty well under all circumstances.

This fifth point is exactly what it sounds like! Think of this as a way of making up for all the times you were a lousy roommate. Yes, no matter how awesome you really may be, I am sure you have already had your moments of less-than-stellar roommateness. When it comes to this, anything goes, as long as whatever you are doing actually fits the definition of nice. For example, get the roomie a candy bar or a bottle of juice during your Munchie Mart run, or give him a thoughtful complement, rather than something horribly generic and boring like, “you are so cool.” (Way overused.) These little things really can make the difference in the relationship with your roommate, and could seal the deal on an awesome friendship that will never die. (Dramatic, I know.)

And that’s it for the definitive list of ways to be the roommate that everybody wishes they had! Questions? Comments? Complains? Threats? Put ‘em below! Also, thanks to our own Rishi Mallipeddi, and Gabriel Zharov of North’s Floor 3 for illustrating how to be (or not be) an awesome roommate!

Top 5 Movies To See This Fall

September 14, 2016 by CommonsAdmin

Do your post-summer blockbuster blues have you missing flying superheroes or short term memory impaired cartoon fish? Well cheer up my movie loving friend, because as the weather cools the theater may just be the place you’ll want to be. Get your popcorn and Milk Duds handy because here are the Top Five movies to see this Fall.

5. Miss Peregrine’s Home for Peculiar Children, opening nationwide on September 30

311503_m1458075365

Directed by creative genius Tim Burton (the man behind Edward Scissorhands & Alice in Wonderland to name a few) this movie is sure to be a fantastic combo of weird and amazing. Spanning alternate realities and featuring, of course, children with unusual abilities. If you like mysteries and movie magic, this is a film for you.

4. Masterminds, opening nationwide on September 30

363922_m1470876770

Okay, so in theory you put a bunch of funny people together in a movie and you get a really funny movie, right. Well anyone who has seen the new Ghostbusters knows that’s not always the case (so, okay, it was a little funny, but could’ve been much better). But Masterminds actually could live up to the hype. With Zach Galifianakis, Kristen Wiig, Owen Wilson, Jason Sudeikis, Kate McKinnon, and Leslie Jones (holy moly, that’s 3 of the 4 Ghostbusters), this one SHOULD be hilarious.

3. The Accountant, opening nationwide on October 14

351340_m1466695792

No this is not a movie about some dude who does taxes, though at times Ben Affleck movies have been about that exciting. This one finds Ben taking a break from being a mediocre Batman to play an accountant with a unique skill set. Anna Kendrick co-stars so maybe she’ll break out into song as he takes on bad guys.

2. Arrival, opening nationwide on November 11

365715_m1471392823

Amy Adams and Jeremy Renner make contact with aliens in a movie that is much more cerebral than, say, Independence Day. Billed as a modern day Close Encounters, this promises to be much more than a typical aliens come to Earth to check us out movie.

1. Rogue One: A Star Wars Story, opening on December 16

358387_m1468977913

Is it a prequel, a sequel, an R2-Dequel? Who cares, it’s Star Wars! But officially…Following the formation of the Galactic Empire, a rogue band of resistance fighters unite for a daring mission to steal the Death Star plans. Sure, the weather will be cold in December, but technically it’s still Fall, so enjoy this one before the Winter Solstice.
